Ways of becoming a doctor – a comparison of model and traditional study programmes in human medicine
The aims of the new prototype curriculums are to link clinical and preclinical content and adopt an interdisciplinary approach to teaching. All four protoype curriculums included in the CHE ranking reached top group status for the “dovetailing of pre-clinic and clinic studies” indicator.
The CHE UniversityRanking includes student assessments for both a traditional and a prototype curriculum at four study locations: Universität Bochum, Charité Berlin, Medizinische Fakultät Mannheim at Universität Heidelberg and Medizinische Hochschule Hannover. In the comparison between protoype and traditional study programmes at the same location, the protoype programmes always achieved a more positive overall assessment by students. All four experimental study programmes included in the CHE ranking reached top group status for the “dovetailing of pre-clinic and clinic studies” indicator.
This does not mean, however, that only those locations that are running prototype programmes offer good, practice-oriented study programmes. The universities of Greifswald and Lübeck, which only offer traditional programmes, also received very positive assessments by students.
The results do show, however, that those faculties that have introduced prototype programmes have made improvements that are recognised and appreciated by students.
