Jörg Dräger and Frank Ziegele become managing directors of the CHE
On the 1st of July, 2008, Jörg Dräger, (Ph.D. Cornell U.), (40), Senator for Science and Research in Hamburg (neutral), will become the new managing director of the non-profit-making Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE). Dräger has been a member of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg) since the 30th October, 2001. Between April 2004 and April 2006, he was also responsible for the Health Department. Professor Dr. Frank Ziegele (41) will also be appointed as a new managing director. Ziegele, professor for higher education and science management at the FH Osnabrück, has been active at the CHE in several leading functions since 1996.
There has been much contact between Jörg Dräger and the CHE in the past years through several reform projects for Hamburg´s higher education institutions in co-operation with the departmental authority for Science and Research. Beginning in August, Dräger will also be responsible for education as member of the Bertelsmann Foundation’s executive board. Frank Ziegele is an internationally recognised expert of higher education and science management. With Dräger and Ziegele, the partners of the CHE, the Bertelsmann Foundation and the German Rector´s Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK)) will be counting on a dual leadership in the future. The two leaders will accept the CHE leadership from its long-time managing director Professor Dr. Detlef Müller-Böling, who reaches retirement age this year and will be leaving the CHE in July.
„The new CHE management knows all facets of the higher education system and will be able to transmit valuable impulses to German higher education institutions in the coming years,” says HRK president Professor Dr. Margret Wintermantel on announcement of the change in personnel. ”With the implementation of new structures and performance-related steering, Jörg Dräger introduced a successful and widely acknowledged higher education reform in Hamburg - proof for his leadership quality. The experienced science managers Dräger and Ziegele stand for continuity at the CHE top management level,“ says Dr. Gunter Thielen, chairman and CEO of the Bertelsmann Foundation.
