European Benchmarking Initiative (EBI) - Improving University Management
The aim of the project is to improve approaches to benchmarking in Europe with a view to developing benchmarks for good practice in university governance. This will help modernise higher education management, promote the attractiveness of European Higher Education and improve its visibility at the international level. CHE is cooperating in this project with the European Centre for Strategic Management of Universities (ESMU).
The project will start with six–months of research into existing approaches to benchmarking: how they are organised, methodology, appropriateness and cost effectiveness for different HEI target groups. This will lead to the development of a multidimensional benchmarking approach with different models and a range of indicators. The idea is to develop a system within which each single HEI can find the most appropriate benchmarking model for its own needs.
Different models will be tested on four groups of universities covering a wide geographical spread. Benchmarking standards will be developed and disseminated widely in the higher education sector through a symposium, two workshops and an interactive website. European universities will be invited to register their interest online and to join a pilot benchmarking programme in order to ensure that the project results are sustainable.
The end result should be a benchmarking handbook, a number of case studies, benchmarking standards and an interactive website with comprehensive information and opportunities for benchmarking activities.
