Quest for University Manager of the Year 2019 – six outstanding university managers nominated for the award

The CHE Centre for Higher Education and the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT will once again this year confer their “University Manager of the Year” award. A distinguished jury has nominated six leading figures from German higher education institutions for the award, all of whom have influenced the development of their institution and initiated innovative change processes with outstanding leadership. The six nominees are presented in brief portraits.

A jury, whose members include former Federal Minister of Education and Research Professor Dr. Johanna Wanka and University Manager of the Year 2018 award winner Professor Dr. Karim Khakzar, has nominated six finalists for the “University Manager of the Year 2019” award:

Dr. Muriel Helbig, President of the Technische Hochschule Lübeck Brief portrait
Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch, Rector of the University of Bonn Brief portrait
Professor Dr. Stefan Leible, President of the University of Bayreuth Brief portrait
Professor Dr. Anja Steinbeck, President of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf Brief portrait
Professor Dr. Micha Teuscher, President of Hamburg University of Applied Sciences Brief portrait

“Successful higher education institutions need outstanding personalities. All six nominees have led the way in achieving a clear profile and very good positioning for their respective HEI. This is confirmed by the professionals who surround them, and the facts speak for themselves,” stated Frank Ziegele, CHE Executive Director.

The finalists were selected in a multistage process. HEIs exhibiting especially strong positive development dynamics were identified by carrying out a data-based preselection. This procedure involved assessing data from institutions such as the German Academic Exchange Service, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the CHE University Ranking. The period of observation in this connection went back to the year 2014. During the second selection stage, all university managers identified in the preselection process were questioned about their leadership philosophy and their various management activities. This year, particular attention was given to the strategic potential that digitisation offers HEIs. Covering an additional perspective, executive-level colleagues and the chairs of the relevant university councils were asked about their university management’s leadership performance.
The entire results provided the basis for the jury’s decision to nominate the six finalists.

One of the nominees will be elected as University Manager of the Year 2019 at the ZEIT conference “Hochschule & Bildung” in Berlin on 23 October 2019. The award will be presented during Presidents’ Dinner on the evening before the conference.

The “University Manager of the Year” award was launched in 2008; it has been offered jointly by the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT and the CHE Centre for Higher Education since 2013.
