Hochschulforum Digitalisierung supports six higher education institutions with peer-to-peer strategic consulting

Higher education institutions in Germany are no longer happy to simply respond to digital transformation – they want to actively shape it themselves This calls for innovative course offerings, new technologies for course organisation, the teaching of digital skills, and better support programmes, not only for students, but also for members of the teaching staff.

For the third time now, Hochschulforum Digitalisierung offers higher education institutions (HIEs) the opportunity to participate in peer-to-peer strategic consulting. So far, 99 HEIs in total have applied to participate in the programme. Over the course of a year, the selected HEIs will receive support from the Stifterverband, the CHE Centre for Higher Education and experts from Hochschulforum Digitalisierung in implementing their strategic ideas on digitalisation in teaching and learning. The HEIs selected this year are:

• Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin, University of Applied Sciences
• Bielefeld University
• Hochschule für Gesundheit Bochum, University of Applied Sciences
• University of Bremen
• SRH University Heidelberg
• Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

In addition to receiving strategic consulting, the HEIs, selected by a jury, will network with each other and with other HEIs at workshops and conferences.

“The peer-to-peer strategic consulting scheme offered by Hochschulforum Digitalisierung is a highly sought-after support programme for higher education institutions,” commented Volker Meyer-Guckel, Deputy Secretary General of Stifterverband. “We also want to develop new opportunities for university managements to network on this topic in the future.”

Among other things, the selected HEIs described in their applications specific strategic challenges to be addressed within the peer-to-peer process. The HEIs were also able to demonstrate having undertaken promising preliminary work on innovative, digitally supported teaching and learning scenarios; they additionally stated that the consultancy results would have a sustainable effect on the further development of strategies and the implementation of measures within their respective university, and how this would be achieved.

“German higher education institutions are making progress when it comes to digitalisation. The applications submitted demonstrate impressively how strongly universities have developed strategically in recent years,” stated Jörg Dräger, Executive Director of the CHE Centre for Higher Education. “In particular, they are increasingly teaching the skills required in a digital society.”

Up until 2020, Hochschulforum Digitalisierung provides peer-to-peer strategic consulting to six HEIs each year, helping them to implement their strategic ideas on digitalisation in teaching and learning. These measures are flanked by additional services to help support the HEIs’ strategy processes.

Hochschulforum Digitalisierung (HFD) orchestrates the discourse on higher education in the digital age. Its mission is to inform, consult and connect stakeholders from universities, politics, business and society. HFD was founded in 2014. It is a joint initiative by Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, the CHE Centre for Higher Education, and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK). HFD is financed by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
