Ethiopian Institute of Higher Education (EIHE) founded

The founding conference for the Ethiopian Institute of Higher Education (EIHE) took place at Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia) today. The Institute will provide training opportunities for leaders of Ethiopian higher education institutions. The project is based on the Higher Education Leadership and Management (HELM) programme, implemented by the CHE Centre for Higher Education and CHEPS Center for Higher Education Policy Studies (NL).

The Ethiopian higher education system is developing rapidly: according to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), 22 new universities have opened in the last ten years, and ten more are in the pipeline. Ethiopia invests 14 per cent of its gross domestic product in education, 20 per cent of which in university education. This is also an investment in the future of the many young people in this country. Such rapid growth requires more teaching staff to take on management functions in universities. In light of this, CHE was commissioned by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to transfer its over ten years of experience in higher education in developing countries to the HELM Ethiopia programme. This programme provided university presidents, university vice presidents and deans with professional training. It was realized with the Center for Higher Education Policy Studies (CHEPS).

In the future, EIHE will take on this task itself, providing training for Ethiopian leaders in HE at universities. This week, the first round of leadership training for Ethiopian deans was launched. Professor Dr. Frank Ziegele is once again in Addis Ababa and is pleased about the development: “For ten years, CHE has provided further training for deans and university managers in Africa; now, our initiative has reached a new level: we transfer our knowledge to EIHE, allowing it to take root in the country for the long term.”

In cooperation with its partners, CHE has also organised advanced training for participants from higher education institutions from developing and emerging countries since 2007, such as the “International Deans’ Course Africa/Asia” within the DIES Programme (Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies), a joint effort by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) and the DAAD.
In 2016 and 2017, CHE planned and realized the GIZ-commissioned Ethiopian Higher Education Leadership and Management (HELM) programme for university managers from Ethiopia.
