Hochschulforum Digitalisierung: digital strategy consulting available for six universities

Hochschulforum Digitalisierung (German Forum for Higher Education in the Digital Age) continues its work and is now offering strategy consulting to universities. Until 2020, the Forum will support six universities each year in developing their own strategy for teaching and learning in the digital age, ensuring its alignment with the university’s individual goals. The aim of the new programme is to advance sustainable and strategic integration of digital teaching and learning in higher education.

In the digital age, establishing innovative formats of teaching and learning is essential for universities. Hochschulforum Digitalisierung’s latest programme draws on this and will support six universities each year to actively shape the digital shift in teaching and learning, and to develop a sustainable strategy. Peer-to-peer strategy consulting is key to the advancement of the national initiative Hochschulforum Digitalisierung 2020.

Experts from other universities, foundations and industry will advise the selected universities within a structured process. The consulting process includes on-site workshops to reflect on or develop strategic approaches of the respective university, to define individual goals; and to initiate the implementation of specific measures. Related to the strategy consulting is the facilitation of the exchange of experiences between the participating universities.

Until 2020, each year six universities will be given the opportunity to participate in the programme. The selected universities will reflect the diversity of university types as well as the different levels of development of their existing strategic approaches to digital teaching and learning in higher education. Universities wishing to participate in the programme are invited to apply by 20 May 2017 via

Strategy consulting is one of the core elements pursued by Hochschulforum Digitalisierung, which will continue its work until 2020. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the joint initiative of the Stifterverband, the CHE Centre for Higher Education and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) focuses on two additional key areas: besides advising universities, the Forum intends to establish a Germany-wide network for university teaching and learning. Workshops, learning modules and an annual summer school will be held, giving teaching staff and university staff from media centres, teaching and learning centres, and university libraries the opportunity to gain advice on the use of digital technologies in teaching and learning and to share their experiences with the community.

Moreover, Hochschulforum Digitalisierung intends to continue developing innovative ideas and solutions for digital practice in higher education by establishing ad hoc working groups. The topics under investigation in 2017/2018 include teacher training and digitisation; the continued development of the curriculum; and issues related to the recognition of digital teaching formats. Experts interested in becoming involved in the Forum are invited to apply via the Call for Experts on the Forum’s website.
