Wanted: University Manager of the Year 2016 – six university managers nominated for the award
The CHE Centre for Higher Education and the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT present the “University Manager of the Year” award again this year. A jury has nominated six university managers for the award, all of whom have shaped the development of their higher education institution with outstanding leadership and initiated innovative change processes. The title will be awarded on 21 November.
The following individuals have been nominated for the “University Manager of the Year 2016” award:
Professor Dr. Michael Braun, President of the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm
Professor Dr. Brigitte Grass, President of Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences
Professor Dr. Hans-Hennig von Grünberg, President of the Hochschule Niederrhein
Professor Dr. Volker Linneweber, President of Saarland University
Professor Dr. Ulrich Rüdiger, Rector of the University of Konstanz
Professor Dr. Wilhelm-Günther Vahrson, President of Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development
“Successful higher education institutions need outstanding personalities. All six nominees have initiated strong development dynamics at their universities, reinforcing efforts to position them and make their mark in the higher education landscape. This is confirmed by the professionals who surround them, and the facts speak for themselves,” stated Frank Ziegele, CHE Executive Director.
The finalists were selected in several stages. A preselection involved assessing data from the German Academic Exchange Service, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the CHE University Ranking, among others. Managers of HEIs that are considered to be particularly promising in the German higher education landscape made it to the next stage. Next, all of the candidates were questioned about their leadership philosophy and their various management activities, paying particular attention to the contribution they have made to the strategic development of their respective HEI. In a bid to shed light on the findings gained from a different perspective, the relevant vice rectors, vice presidents and chairs of university councils were asked about the leadership performance of their university management.
Drawing on the results of the preselection and the outcome of the survey, a jury of recognised experts nominated six finalists from this group. The University Manager of the Year 2016 will be selected from their midst at the ZEIT conference “Hochschule & Bildung” on 22 November 2016.
