An overview: Distribution of digital learning scenarios in higher education

The spectrum of digitisation activities in higher education ranges from recordings of lectures on the internet to educational software and virtual reality offerings. A publication by the German Forum for Higher Education in the Digital Age (Hochschulforum Digitalisierung) provides an overview of the distribution and potential of digitised learning scenarios.

Virtually all higher education institutions (HEIs) use digital elements or formats in their teaching. However, the form and extent vary from HEI to HEI and even from degree programme to degree programme. In its study “Digital learning scenarios in higher education”, the Higher Education Forum on Digitisation now provides a structured overview of examples and fields of application from Germany and abroad.

The authors identified 57 case studies and examples of digitised learning elements and formats at HEIs in Germany in addition to 188 abroad. The examples have been grouped together under eight learning scenarios based on a variety of features. These include the “enrichment” scenario, which describes the integration of digital elements such as videos in lectures, and “games and simulation” in which a digitised reality is learnt, for example involving operation exercises using data glasses. A detailed analysis illustrates the distribution of the individual scenarios, as well as the strengths, weaknesses and risks surrounding them.

Finally, the team of authors derived eight options for action for HEIs from the inventory. Examples include the possibilities arising in individual self-learning phases and the opportunities offered by freely accessible digital learning material for HEIs on a tight budget.

About the study The study entitled “Digital learning scenarios in higher education” was conducted by the “Innovations in Learning and Examination Scenarios” Working Group of the Higher Education Forum on Digitisation. To this end, the authors led by Dr. Klaus Wannemacher of HIS-Institut für Hochschulentwicklung (HIS-HE) identified and analysed 57 national and 188 international case studies of digitised learning elements and formats. The publication was produced in the context of the Higher Education Forum on Digitisation and was commissioned by the CHE Centre for Higher Education.

The German Forum for Higher Education in the Digital Age (Hochschulforum Digitalisierung)The German Forum for Higher Education in the Digital Age (Hochschulforum Digitalisierung) is a joint project of the Stifterverband, the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) and the CHE Centre for Higher Education involving the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Conference of the Ministers of Education. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
