Seal of approval for the CHE Ranking

The CHE Ranking has received the "IREG approved" seal of approval. The Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence (IREG) honours higher education rankings whose transparency, methodology and reliability meet the highest standards.

The most comprehensive and detailed ranking of German higher education institutions can now display the "IREG approved" title, as announced by the IREG on April 28. An international committee of experts reviewed the CHE Ranking on the basis of a comprehensive catalogue of criteria developed by IREG.

Evaluation criteria included the quality of the publication and presentation of results, the transparency of methods and internal quality assurance. The expert group, whose members themselves are not involved in the production of rankings, assessed the ranking on the basis of a self-evaluation report.

The multi-dimensional approach, which enables prospective students to set individual preferences when selecting a study programme, as well as complete transparency as regards methodology and data acquisition, were considered particularly positive aspects of the CHE Ranking. The IREG experts equally praised the publication strategy, which, in addition to the annual publication of a selection of results in the ZEIT Study Guide, also makes the results available for free on the Internet at www.ranking.zeit.de.

The CHE Ranking can now wear the "IREG approved" quality label.

CHE Managing Director Frank Ziegele said, "IREG certification acknowledges the steady performance of the ranking team in helping to support prospective students choose the right study programme in a fair, informative and competent way. It is not only the CHE Ranking, but also - and above all - its users who benefit from the seal of approval, he said. Dr. Ziegele added that the large number of rankings with very different approaches made it difficult to assess their reliability and methodological quality.

Certification by the IREG expert group is conducted analogous to the accreditation procedures that are usually applied in higher education under the auspices of international experts. The CHE Ranking is only the third university ranking world-wide to be awarded the IREG certificate. The quality label is valid for three years, until 31 December 2017.
