First interim report of U-Multirank analyses strengths and weaknesses of existing rankings
The U-Multirank project which is developing a concept and testing the feasibility of a multi-dimensional global university ranking launched a first interim report on its project website.
In a first step the project partners (CHE, CHEPS, CWTS, INCENTIM, OST) made a detailed stocktaking of existing rankings and other systems of measuring and comparing higher education institutions. The report highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the various approaches. Based on the analysis of existing approaches and available data bases principles of designing an alternative approach to international rankings that is user-driven, multi-dimensional and interactive are elaborated. The model includes teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, international orientation regional engagement as relevant dimensions of performance of higher education institutions. The basic philosophy of U-Multirank is to make visible the diversity of higher education institutions and the existence of multiple forms of excellence. Higher education institutions in Europe and throughout the world have different missions and different institutional profiles whereas most global rankings so far were limited to internationally oriented, research intense universities only. Other institutional profiles and other areas of excellence than excellence in research were outside their scope.
Based on the design principles and the model of dimensions and indicators for an alternative ranking U-Multirank went into intense consultations with stakeholders and is currently finalising the set of indicators which will be tested in pilot studies for an institutional ranking and field-based rankings in business and engineering. The pilot study, including a sample of about 150 higher education institutions from Europe, the USA/Canada, Asia, Australia, Africa and Latin America will start in September; during summer the instruments and questionnaires will be fine-tuned in a pre-test.
