News 30.11.2015 Computer Science Master’s ranking now online: students evaluate their HEIs Brandenburg University of Technology, the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, Passau University, OTH Regensburg and Reutlingen University gained several outstanding marks for their Computer Science Master’s programmes in the current online edition of the CHE University Ranking. In Austria, FH Joanneum and St. Pölten UAS were ranked highly. Svenja Schulze, Minister of Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, delivered the laudatio News 17.11.2015 U-Multirank's New Readymade Rankings by University Age Older universities tend to perform better than younger ones across most measures of research excellence, according to a new analysis by the international university ranking U-Multirank. However, many universities are bucking the trend and finding strategies to outperform their years. News 28.10.2015 Higher Education Pact eight years on: Baden-Württemberg benefits most from growing student numbers The upward trend in student enrolment in Germany continues. The number of first-year students increased by 43 per cent between 2005 and 2013. The majority of these additional students enrolled at HEIs in North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Universities of applied sciences and engineering have benefited in particular from this development. News 01.10.2015 Good dual study manual The CHE Centre for Higher Education has just published a manual containing comprehensive strategies and instruments for developing quality in dual study programmes. The free downloadable online publication focuses on enhancing cooperation between the two learning locations – HEIs and companies – and on linking theory and practice in higher education.  News 28.09.2015 New release: The digital revolution in education One university uses a software that identifies which subjects are best for each individual student, including their expected final grades. Another higher education institution has halved drop-out rates from a maths course with a program that analyses what, how and at which speed each individual learns. A corporation requests its applicants to serve sushi in a virtual restaurant because the computer game predicts their professional success better than their degrees and CVs. In their new book “Die digitale Bildungsrevolution” (The digital revolution in education), Jörg Dräger and Ralph Müller-Eiselt demonstrate how the networked world will fundamentally change not only our education system, but also our society News 09.09.2015 Higher Education Forum: 20 theses on digitising teaching At its mid-term conference on September 9th, the German Forum for Higher Education in the Digital Age (Hochschulforum Digitalisierung) discussed the potential and challenges of digitisation in academic teaching and the higher education system, and the necessary policy framework. News 30.06.2015 Winter semester 2015/16: national proportion of numerus clausus subjects declines , Hamburg and Bremen with the most numerus clausus restrictions Before attempting to embark on an undergraduate programme in winter semester 2015/16, many school-leavers who have just received their Abitur certificate will first have to clear the hurdle of numerus clausus (NC), or restricted entry. A current evaluation by the CHE Centre for Higher Education reveals major differences in numerus clausus restrictions between the various federal states. Compared to winter semester 2013/14, however, the proportion of numerus clausus subjects fell in Germany.  News 04.05.2015 CHE University Ranking 2015: up-to-date orientation for prospective students in the STEM subjects Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science and Geography, as well as Medicine Students assess their study conditions in the latest CHE University Ranking, which will be published in the ZEIT Study Guide 2015/16 on 5 May 2015. One third of all subjects are re-evaluated each year. The subjects reassessed this year were Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Pharmacy, Political Science, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing Science, Geoscience, Geography and Sports Sciences News 24.04.2015 Extended horizon as opposed to monoculture ‒ 10 Theses on Realigning the Excellence Initiative The federal government and German states have agreed to continue the Excellence Initiative, but are still debating on how to flesh it out. As a contribution to the ongoing debate, the CHE Centre for Higher Education now presents its considerations in favour of a concept for reissuing the Excellence Initiative. The core element is extending the horizon of higher education excellence whilst retaining a strong degree of selectivity.  News 15.04.2015 Teacher training: inclusion far from being a matter of course Inclusion is now a matter of concern to all teaching staff, whether primary teachers, graduate grammar school teachers or vocational teachers. In the debate on inclusive teacher training, Monitor Lehrerbildung now presents data for the first time. These figures show that nowhere near all students training to become teachers in Germany are being sufficiently prepared for working in an inclusive school system. News 30.03.2015 U - Multirank releases second global university rankings: Showcases diversity of university performance with largest global ranking U-Multirank, the new global university ranking, released its second edition online today. This unique new tool for comparing university performance internationally presents information on more than 1,200 higher education institutions, up from 850 just one year ago. The universities come from 83 countries, with more than 1,800 faculties and 7,500 study programmes in seven fields of study. With 21,000 data scores on the institutional level and 37,000 on the field-base level, U-Multirank is the largest global university ranking - and the most comprehensive information system on universities - in the world News 16.02.2015 33 deans from South-East Asia have successfully completed the “International Deans The third and final part of the DAAD programme, the International Deans' Course (IDC), was successfully completed in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on 13 February 2015. The 33 participating deans as well as heads of department came from HEIs in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Laos and the Philippines. The IDC lasts nine months and consists of three workshop units lasting several days. Higher education institutions and policymakers are now being urged to take an active role in shaping digitisation. This is the tenor of a recent publication by the CHE Centre for Higher Education. News 09.01.2015 Student fees in Germany – new publication provides overview in English Implementation, modification and abolition of student fees – and a different development in each of the 16 federal states: It is hard to keep track of the current state of tuition fees for people living in Germany – but even more so for international students as well as international experts on higher education. Yet, student fees are a hot topic in Germany right now: Some politicians demand their re-implementation – some especially with regard to international students. A new synopsis published by the CHE (Centre of Higher Education) provides an overview of the development in the last decade and the status quo. It promotes an alternative model of tuition fees for the future. |
